In short · Updated
Momentum schedules hospitalists, nocturnists and advanced practice providers at one hospital or several. You set up a block pattern such as seven on, seven off once and repeat it across the year, staff day, swing, night and admitter shifts with the clinicians eligible for them, post extra shifts to a job board, and count nights, weekends and holidays against fairness goals. It schedules people; it does not read your census or assign patients.
What makes hospitalist scheduling hard
A hospital medicine group schedules in blocks. Many physicians work seven days on and seven off, or another pattern the group agreed on, and the blocks have to line up with day teams, swing and admitter shifts, nocturnists and APPs. Holidays have to rotate fairly from year to year, a rising census calls for extra shifts, and every vacation request has to fit a block without leaving a team short.
- Keeping block patterns such as seven on, seven off in place all year
- Staffing day, swing, night and admitter shifts every day
- Finding someone for extra shifts when the census climbs
- Rotating nights, weekends and holidays fairly
What Momentum does for a hospitalist group
Block schedules, set up once
Build a block, such as seven days on followed by seven days off, then repeat it across the year with pattern duplication, at an interval you choose in days or weeks. Change a single week for a vacation without touching the rest.
Each physician’s contract holds their weekly hours and days, and the hours count report compares scheduled and worked hours with it, so a part-time hospitalist stays on their share.

Day, swing, night and admitter shifts
Day teams, swing and admitter shifts, nocturnist nights and APP shifts are lines with their own hours. The shift view groups each day into your own blocks, and the timeline view shows coverage hour by hour, with gaps and overlaps highlighted.
Rules such as a minimum rest between shifts or a cap on consecutive nights are applied every time the schedule is generated, and validation lists every rule a draft breaks before it goes out.
Extra shifts when the census climbs
Momentum does not read your census. When volume calls for an extra shift, add it, or import open shifts from a file or over SFTP, and post it to the job board. Eligible hospitalists bid from the app and you approve who takes it. Extra shifts count in each hospitalist’s hours and fairness totals.
Fair nights, weekends and holidays
Nights, weekends, holidays and blocks are counted for every clinician against goals you set by role, so nocturnists are measured against nocturnists. Goals can be weighted for part-time schedules, and the equity report shows who is above or below target before you publish.
Time off and swaps
Hospitalists send time-off requests and preferences from the app. When you approve a request, Momentum lists the shifts it conflicts with and lets you clear or keep each one. Swaps go through the web or the mobile app and wait for administrator approval, and schedules appear in Outlook or any calendar app.
Where Momentum fits
Momentum schedules people. It does not read your census, assign patients or replace your EHR, and it holds no patient data. It does not track licenses or hospital privileges. Around the schedule, Momentum adds time and attendance, payroll exports, Outlook calendars, Microsoft sign-in and file or SFTP imports.
Frequently asked questions
Can Momentum handle seven-on, seven-off schedules?
Yes. Set up one block and repeat it across the year with pattern duplication at the interval you choose, then adjust single weeks for time off. Each hospitalist’s blocks, nights and holidays are counted against their goals.
Does Momentum adjust staffing to the census?
No. Momentum does not read census data. You add extra shifts, or import them unassigned from a file or over SFTP, and post them to the job board, where eligible hospitalists bid and you approve who takes each one.
Can nocturnists and APPs be on the same schedule?
Yes. Nocturnists, day hospitalists and advanced practice providers share one schedule, each with their own contract, eligibility, rules and fairness goals.
Can hospitalists trade shifts from their phone?
Yes. They request a give, take or swap from the mobile app or the web, and an administrator approves it. Notifications go by email, in-app message or mobile, as each person sets them.
How long does it take to get started?
Each rollout includes setting up your rules, importing your current schedule, connecting the systems you need and training your schedulers. Depending on scope, going live takes from a few days for the lightest setups to a few months for a multi-site group.
What does Momentum cost?
Plans start at USD 5.99 per user per month, in four tiers: Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise. The pricing page lists what each one includes.
