In short · Updated
Momentum schedules attendings, fellows, residents and advanced practice providers across a university hospital and its affiliated sites. It staffs services, call and clinics from your rules, limits residents and fellows to the services of their rotation, checks the maximum hours and minimum rest you set and lists any breach, counts call and holidays against fairness goals you can weight by clinical effort, and lets everyone request time off and trade shifts from their phone. It does not log duty hours for ACGME reporting or replace your residency management system.
Why academic scheduling is hard
An academic department schedules three groups at once. Faculty split their time between clinical work, teaching and research, so each has a different clinical share. Fellows and residents rotate through services on dates set by the program, with duty-hour limits on top. Call has to be covered at the university hospital and its affiliates, and every conference week or vacation ripples through all three groups.
- Matching each faculty member’s call and service to their clinical share
- Putting residents and fellows only on the services of their rotation
- Keeping hours and rest within the limits the program sets
- Covering call at the university hospital and affiliated sites
What Momentum does for an academic department
Faculty, fellows, residents and APPs on one schedule
Each service, clinic and call line at each hospital is a line in the schedule. Attendings, fellows, residents and advanced practice providers are eligible only for the lines you approve. Momentum generates the schedule from those rules, lists every rule a draft breaks and shows each unassigned shift before you publish.
Each division can keep its own role groups and saved filters, so its scheduler works on its own lines while the department shares one schedule.
Rotations and duty-hour rules for residents and fellows
A resident or fellow can be made eligible for a service until a set date, so they are scheduled there only for the length of their rotation. Eligibility can also be limited to certain weekdays, such as a weekly continuity clinic.
Set maximum hours and minimum rest to match your program’s limits; validation lists any breach before the schedule goes out. Momentum checks the rules you set; it does not log worked duty hours for ACGME reporting. Our ACGME duty-hours guide sums up the current rules and the 2028 proposal.
Service weeks and call across hospitals
Inpatient services that run by the week can be set up as a block and repeated with pattern duplication. Call at the university hospital and at each affiliate has its own line, and the timeline view shows coverage hour by hour, with gaps and overlaps highlighted.
Fair call by clinical effort
Call, weekends, holidays and service weeks are counted for every attending against fairness goals you can weight, so a faculty member at half clinical effort can take half the call of a full-time colleague. The equity report shows who is above or below target before you publish, ready to share with the division.
Conferences, vacation and swaps
Vacation, conferences and academic days can each be their own time-off type. Requests come from the app or the web, and when you approve one, Momentum lists the shifts it conflicts with and lets you clear or keep each one. Swaps are approved by an administrator, and schedules appear in Outlook or any calendar app.
Where Momentum fits
Momentum schedules people. It does not log duty hours for ACGME reporting, run evaluations or case logs, or replace your residency management system or EHR, and it holds no patient data. It does not track licenses or hospital privileges. Around the schedule, Momentum adds time and attendance, payroll exports, Outlook calendars, Microsoft sign-in and file or SFTP imports.
Academic departments already schedule with Momentum
University departments and academic medical centers in the United States and Canada build their schedules in Momentum, in anesthesiology, neurology, pathology, imaging, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology among others. In all, more than 250 healthcare organizations use Momentum across more than 1,000 sites in nine countries.
Frequently asked questions
Does Momentum track ACGME duty hours?
Momentum checks the limits you set as rules, such as maximum weekly hours and minimum rest between shifts, and lists any breach before you publish. It does not log worked duty hours for ACGME reporting; that stays in your residency management system.
Can residents be limited to the services of their rotation?
Yes. A resident or fellow can be made eligible for a service until a set date and only on certain weekdays, so the automatic schedule places them only where their rotation allows.
Can call be weighted by clinical effort?
Yes. Fairness goals are relative, so an attending with half the clinical effort can be set to take half the call, weekends and holidays of a full-time colleague. The equity report shows who is above or below target.
Can several divisions and hospitals share one schedule?
Yes. Each division, service and hospital has its own lines and role groups, and the department builds and publishes from one schedule.
How long does it take to get started?
Each rollout includes setting up your rules, importing your current schedule, connecting the systems you need and training your schedulers. Depending on scope, going live takes from a few days for the lightest setups to a few months for a multi-site group.
What does Momentum cost?
Plans start at USD 5.99 per user per month, in four tiers: Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise. The pricing page lists what each one includes.
