In short · Updated
Momentum schedules pathologists, pathologists’ assistants, residents and fellows across hospitals and labs. It fills each sign-out service with the pathologists eligible for it, flags any hospital left without frozen-section coverage before you publish, counts call and holidays against the goals you set, and lets everyone request time off and trade shifts from their phone. It schedules people; it does not assign cases or replace your LIS.
Why a pathologist schedule is hard to build
A pathology group staffs services and sites at the same time: sign-out by subspecialty, frozen sections at each hospital while the operating rooms run, grossing, ROSE at bronchoscopy, EUS and IR procedures, autopsies, medical director and blood bank coverage for the clinical lab, plus after-hours AP and CP call. Coverage at one hospital often depends on who is free at another. When the schedule lives in a spreadsheet, every vacation week means another round of calls and emails.
- Assigning sign-out to the right subspecialists every day
- Keeping frozen-section coverage at every hospital during operating hours
- Scheduling pathologists’ assistants for grossing alongside the pathologists
- Rotating call, weekends and holidays in a way the group sees as fair
What Momentum does for a pathology group
Sign-out and services by subspecialty
Each service is a line in the schedule: GI, GU, dermatopathology, breast, hematopathology, cytology, autopsy or clinical pathology. Each pathologist is eligible only for the services you approve. The automatic schedule fills the lines from those rules and lists any shift it could not fill before you publish.
Groups that staff by site get a line for each hospital and the outpatient lab, so the schedule shows who is in each building that day.

Frozen-section coverage at every hospital
Each hospital has its own frozen-section line with the hours its operating rooms run. A minimum presence at a site is set as a rule, and validation flags any day it is not met. The timeline view shows coverage hour by hour, so a gap between the morning and afternoon shifts is visible before it reaches the OR.
Pathologists’ assistants, cytotechnologists and residents in the same schedule
Grossing benches and autopsy prosection for pathologists’ assistants, and ROSE coverage for cytotechnologists, sit next to the pathologists’ services, each team with its own contracts and rules. Residents and fellows are scheduled on the same services, with rest and maximum-hour rules set for them. Our ACGME duty-hours guide sums up the current rules and the 2028 proposal.

Call, holidays and vacation, shared fairly
AP and CP call, weekends, holidays and vacation weeks are counted for every pathologist against goals you set by role, and the equity report shows who is above or below target before the schedule goes out.
Time-off requests and swaps go through the mobile app or the web and are approved by an administrator. When you approve a request, Momentum lists the shifts it touches and lets you clear or keep each one.
Where Momentum fits
Momentum schedules people. It does not assign cases, route slides or replace your LIS or digital pathology system, and it does not track licenses, hospital privileges, or CAP and CLIA requirements. Around them, Momentum adds time and attendance, payroll exports, Outlook calendars, Microsoft sign-in and file or SFTP imports.
Frequently asked questions
Does Momentum assign cases or replace our LIS?
No. Momentum schedules pathologists, pathologists’ assistants and residents: who covers which service and site, and when. Case assignment and slide routing stay in your LIS. Momentum holds scheduling data only, no patient records.
Can Momentum schedule frozen-section coverage at several hospitals?
Yes. Each hospital has its own frozen-section line and hours, a minimum presence per site is set as a rule, and validation and the timeline view show any gap before you publish.
Can pathologists’ assistants, cytotechnologists and residents be scheduled too?
Yes. Pathologists, pathologists’ assistants, cytotechnologists, residents and fellows share one schedule, each team with its own contracts, eligibility and rules.
Can pathologists trade shifts from their phone?
Yes. They request a give, take or swap from the mobile app or the web, and an administrator approves it. Open shifts can be posted to the job board, where pathologists bid and an administrator approves the assignment.
How long does it take to get started?
Each rollout includes setting up your rules, importing your current schedule, connecting the systems you need and training your schedulers. Depending on scope, going live takes from a few days for the lightest setups to a few months for a multi-site group.
